Red alert! You heard it here first. This season, if you’re not brave enough to do a vibrant red look head-to-toe, then accessories are the only answer. Particularly in Milan, red accessories updated everyday pieces offering a more dramatic look. Intense red hues turn heads on soft leather or resin.

Elsewhere, the color pop trend makes accessories super-punchy. Stand out in intense brights or go for contemporary appeal in multi-colored designs. Colored panelling makes a strong statement, while the use of clashing or opposite colors is set to continue for new season accessories.

Belts are those perfect little additions to cinch a waist or add more impact. For autumn onwards, don’t miss wide waist belts (as seen at Balmain, Burberry London and Saint Laurent). The defining aspect is extreme width and the catwalks presented buckled and back-fastened styles. Simple constructions with minimal decoration are perfect at night but try daywear variations with traditional buckle fastenings too.

At Jeremy Scott, Maison Margiela and Elie Saab, the western belt was a winner. Part of the AW17 Global Traveller trend, the western belt emerges as a standout item permeated with antique western influence. Go for conch belt interpretations or channel vintage style in classically decorative metal buckles.

Don’t overlook the corset belt either, which turned heads at Prada and Anna Sui. Laced-up and directly translating historical themes that underpin the season, the belt will be a fresh addition to your accessory collection. Keep it hyper-feminine with metal adornments and embroidery embellishment.

Missoni and Etro both showcased the maxi knit scarf. You’ll want this in your wardrobe as it’s inspired by different but powerful trends including Shake It Up and Urban Street. Imbued with a new dynamic spirit, the perennial scarf now comes in extreme lengths. Your essential knitted item just got a statement makeover.

Touching the edges of partywear season (admired at Rochas, Roberto Cavalli and Diane von Furstenberg), the evening scarf makes waves. If the dress has been reinstated as a must-have womenswear item, then so too has the evening scarf. Accessorize in extended lengths and elegant fabrics – satin, chiffon and skinny silk offer color and embellishment for evening.

More casual and carefree, the silk neckerchief starred at Antonio Marras, Chloé and Tory Burch. The accessory transitions from a summer staple to a winter directional item thanks to delicate monochrome and printed silk squares. If you’re into the Global Traveller trend, this item is your new go-to finishing touch.
Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, Fendi and Gucci all created top handle bags proving the ladylike theme has gained commercial traction. Its timeless quality has seen the formal handbag uptrend from previous seasons. New for now, think exotic materials, eccentric color combinations and oversized silhouettes for a vibrant approach.

Meanwhile, the smartphone-only bag has landed. Check out designs from Valentino, Lanvin and Jason Wu that carry only the essential phone in a micro-mini bag. The piece is fun with a casual-luxe attitude.

Also proving a hit is the statement shine bag, as seen at Proenza Schouler, Christopher Kane and Alexander Wang Materials. Party season informs these bags as diamanté encrusts smaller shapes, with others adorned by buckles and binder clips.
