Small details, big difference

You’ve not sorted your autumn/winter look, if you haven’t got your accessories in the bag too. We’ve done what we do best – scoured the streets and the catwalks – to bring you all the new accessory trends for AW17/18.

Asia Fashion Week led the pack with brand new bags trends. One of our favourites was the leather rucksack. Evolving from last season’s sports-driven direction, the bag now comes in more formal iterations. Check out references to classic satchel designs with double-buckle envelope fastenings.

The clutch was also favoured by the fash pack in Asia. At the shows and in the streets, the clutch offered new bag variations. Appliqué, textured or printed uppers make a statement, while zip-top styles are also big news.

The perennial appeal of the tote bag was felt with AW17’s utility tote. Suede or denim edges align the piece with luxury, offering upscale options. Other renditions were simpler on a classic canvas.

Belt Business

The extra-long belt is trending. Make a statement by adding an accent color pop in orange, pink or coral hues as seen at Asia Fashion Week. Tastemakers work the new piece for off-kilter style. Don’t miss belts that hang far below the knee, seen in D-ring frame leather buckle variations.

Also hot this season is the overlay belt (check it out at Christopher Kane and Givenchy). The notable piece was loved at the London collections and Milan, Paris and New York followed suit. Wear across quilted outerwear jackets, tailored blazers or trench coats to get the look. While buckle trims provide a formal approach, clip fastenings combine with webbing textures lending a sporty feel.

Scarf Stories

First noted in London and continued throughout the Fashion Weeks, the check scarf was popular for the men’s collections. Look out for refined short shapes or natural tones that add an outdoor, rustic touch. There’s also delicate long versions or oversized abstract items. Raf Simons and Burberry London highlight the scarf trend’s casual and formal appeal against trench coats and sweaters.

For AW17, the oversized scarf is a winner in lofty yarn, chunky cable knits, heavy hand-gauges and ombré options. Choose exaggerated widths and lengths and casually drape across the front of the body or wrap around the neck to top off your favourite autumn outfit.

Color News

Make a provocative statement in machine red, the raciest color story this season. Especially across accessories, the primary hue offers modern contrast or adds further interest on tonal ensembles.

Featuring at Issey Miyake and Raf Simons, white is the fresh, clean tone for new season accessories. Creating an active feel, D-rings and strapping hardware offer contrast accents to apparel collections. Update your accessories collection with white knits, webbing, nylons and acrylic surfaces.

Keeping it light, the sand shade offers an earthy alternative to crisp white. Versace, Valentino and Prada highlight the shade’s versatile appeal with neutrally toned accessory pieces. Think webbings and cord for a casual approach, or go for tactile leathers and suedes if premium styling is more your thing.

Daks, Maison Mihara Yasuhiro AW17

Last but definitely not least is classic black – a must-have for new accessory shapes. As seen at Y-3 and Daks, the commercial tone complements sport and casual looks plus smart offerings. The dark shade’s all-round appeal is noted with the active Nocturnal direction (nylon, technical knits and webbing) or on soft felts for a more refined approach.

If you’re overwhelmed by the amount to choose from when it comes to AW17 accessories, we have a solid piece of advice: buy a bigger wardrobe.
