Take a shine to the metallics trend. Our trend report walks you through silver, gold and other precious metals seen from high-end designers to the high street. Follow our four part series – the trend, the sneakers, the skirts, and the dresses. Shimmer on!
The Trend: Modern metallics
Metallic fabrics are nothing new but modern metallics are full of even more lustrous shine, elevating casual pieces and eveningwear. Fil coupé jacquards sparkle in the evening, while woven lamé and foil-coated leather add luxe and youthful allure. See Gucci, Tibi and Zimmermann where silhouettes were created from shimmery, mirrored and liquid fabrics.

Silver and Gold
Metallic silver (championed at Mugler, Chanel and Oscar de la Renta) updates classic pieces and adds a futuristic take to more directional items. Winter looks get that convenient day-to-night makeover in silver – think mirror-finish materials for maximum impact or pale silver tones as a subtle nod to the trend.
A touch of gold across knitwear offers burnished yarns in chainette, solid or eyelash constructions. When plaited with black mohair, sparkle thread gives a light shimmer for an understated effect.
Muted shades remain popular but pastel metallics liven things up. Create an elegant look with footwear in a pearlized finish.
Designers create statement upper effects in multi-tonal hues of silver, blue, copper, purple and pink. Go head first into the trend with shoes covered in full or dip your toe into the look by choosing sneakers with a pearl highlight (the tongue panel works well).

Lamé, lurex, luxe! The pleated skirt makes a sparkling statement. Pleating is an important style detail and on skirts it couldn’t be more glam. Metallic pleated skirts are hitting the mainstream. Elevated and opulent, it’s all about channeling maximalism. Go for calf-grazing midi lengths in gold, silver, copper and rose that will get you noticed.
Need some styling tips? Worn with heels, it is overtly feminine. Try a quirkier, preppy look by adding socks with your open toe sandals. Flat shoes or sneakers teamed with your metallic skirt offer a more modern, laidback approach. For special events, team with ruffled blouses or barely there crop tops. Pared back with chunky statement knits, it’s compliment-worthy all day.
Arguably leaving the best until last in our sparkly metallic trends series, the metallic dress is a true hero piece.
You’ll need at least one metallic party dress to make a statement as evening falls. As seen at Saint Laurent, asymmetric and romantic draped variations are key. Deconstructed cuts meet languid metallic lamé in figure-skimming renditions.
So go on, shine bright for party season!
